Thai Tai

For the second time this month Thai Tai is shuttered by the DOH. I recommend eating at any of the other 10000 Thai restaurants in the neighborhood.
Last night, CB1’s land use committee approved an application for a sidewalk cafe at the new Williamsburger restaurant, located at the corner of South 2nd and Wythe. According to the owner, the restaurant will be a burger and shake joint, and should be open with a week or two. Williamsburger still needs to visit CB1’s public safety committee for a liquor license (beer and wine only).

New developments on the Williamsburg bar food scene: “Was at Union Pool this Saturday and saw they have a huge new taco truck parked in their backyard. It wasn’t there as recently as two weeks ago, so it’s a pretty new addition. They were selling pork, beef, chicken, and veggie tacos for $3 each and they were pretty decent, better than say the cheese puffs over at the Levee or the pizza at the Charleston. Word on the street is Williamsburger the spot set to open on South 2nd and Wythe. They will serve its first burger in two weeks, though by the looks of this signage, maybe it’s even sooner.
COMING SOON First-generation Dominican-American Cynthia Diaz will open a tapas bar and cocktail lounge in Williamsburg named Bar Celona (98 S. 4th St., between Berry Street and Bedford Avenue) later this summer or in early fall. Ms. Diaz has a degree in fashion marketing and has worked in the fashion industry, but her family is involved in the supermarket and food-service businesses. Tapas, priced between $13 and $15, will feature imported Spanish olives and cheeses — and will be served until midnight. Cocktails are being developed by Tad Carducci and Paul Tanguay, the same team that did the beverage program at the new Mercadito Cantina. The New York Sun

Slice reports on an August opening of a new Williamsburg pizza joint: “Nicola Bertolotti…will be opening his own place in Williamsburg in mid August…Fornaccio will make Neapolitan-style pizzas there, and the oven will be wood-fired…The space is on Havemeyer between North 6th and North 7th streets, not more than a pizza-brick’s throw away from Fornino, where Bertolotti once worked under chef-owner Michael Ayoub.”
Also last week Marco Pierre White came into Diner for cheeseburger. He then canceled his order, torn hundred dollar bill in half and threw half of it at the bartender and walked out. I guess he’s got a reputation to keep up for being crazier than a shithouse rat. Tom Mylan

Taste of Williamsburg

The L Magazine has announced they are throwing their First Annual Block Party in the McCarren Park Pool on Tuesday July 8th. They’ll have music, beer, a Taste of Williamsburg from restaurants including Diner, Marlowe & Sons, and Fette Sau, and a screening of Wet Hot American Summer, introduced by Michael Showalter himself.
TONY has the inside track on the opening of B&B. Here’s the lowdown: “The name conjures a country inn, but it’s a speakeasy vibe that pervades this Williamsburg eatery. Chef-owner Coby Farro (The Tasting Room, Spotted Pig) offers gastropub-inspired plates like mac and cheese tossed with crispy boar’s ear.” Status: Unknown. Phone number goes to blank message. 109 S. 6th Street, Williamsburg; 718-782-2333. Eater
